I'm a terrible poet

But I want to say things without explicitly saying them and hope that someone out there can relate on some level. That's the power and the beauty of poetry. So deal with it.

I've seen the sights
I've shunned the lights
I've stumbled through
The cold, cold nights

I want to grow
I want to show
That I've learned how
To take the blow

I want to stand
I want to land
On both my feet
And take your hand

Boomerang, take me 'round again
I've been here many times before
I don't really think that I can
Handle just what you've got in store

Over and over comes this strain
You think by now 'twould be a bore
Each time anew I'm hit with pain
I just can't take it anymore

Again my heart and soul you drain
I'm ripped apart and out I pour
Please stop this pounding in my brain
It all leaves me feeling so sore

So let the speculation begin......

One line review: Not as funny as I was hoping for, a disappointment after the pleasant surprise that was Old School.

Modest Mouse

Tuesday was quite the exciting day for me. For one thing it was my mother's birthday....(didn't even have time to call, oops!) I had to get up at 5AM to go to work, then we had to load our experiment onto the KC-135 starting at 7AM, fix a bunch of problems, and then fly at 3:15PM. I finally left work at 6:30PM, after a 12 hour day, and went straight to the Modest Mouse concert at Scene Pavilion. I finally got home at midnight and just collapsed into bed. All in all, it was a great day, but exhausting. So I thought I would try and write up a little review of the concert. Here's the setlist, as best as I can remember it:

3rd planet
The View
Float On
Interstate 8
Black Cadillacs
Wild Pack of Family Dogs
Doin' the Cockroach
Ocean Breathes Salty
Satin in a Coffin
Bukowski
Paper Thin Walls
The Good Times Are Killing Me
Trailer Trash

The World at Large
Blame It on The Tetons
Neverending Math Equation

Modest Mouse really knows how to put on a great show. My only complaint, really, is that I wish it had been longer. Isaac Brock was right-on for the entire show, never backing down from his trademark intensity. He was annunciating every syllable and striking every power chord as if the world depended on it. The energy was contagious. They started the show strong, getting the audience going early with 3rd Planet, The View, and of course Float On. That bought them some time to dabble into older material like Interstate 8 and Wild Pack of Family Dogs, which I enjoyed. Brock took an especially harsh tone on Black Cadillacs, which had always seemed to me to be one of the softer songs on Good News... Doin' the Cockroach was a big hit with the audience, and everyone went crazy when Brock started screaming into his guitar pickups. (Honestly, about half the people were excited, and the more "MTV" half were just confused.) The band pulled out the banjo and violin for a couple of songs, (Satin in a Coffin and Bukowski), and then cranked the energy back up with one of my personal favorites, Paper Thin Walls. Trailer Trash was another fun song to hear, but it made me wish that the band had mixed things up a bit more, and played more older material. It seemed kind of strange to play The World at Large in the encore, since I'm used to hearing it flow right into Float On. I was a bit disappointed with the encore though, as it didn't really seem a fitting end to the show. Still, I enjoyed it immensely and it was a lot of fun to hear the band live where the uniquely raw quality of their music is accentuated into the chaos of beautiful music.

Current Mood: Exhausted
Currently listening to: Good News For People Who Love Bad News and misc. tracks (AKA Modest Mix II) by Modest Mouse
Last movie I saw: Dr. Strangelove
One line review: Well, strange is right there in the title...Supposedly a classic, but I think I missed something.
